The calculation depends on if you believe the emulsion layer is 1 grain
deep or not! if it is 8 grains deep then you can get 8 combinations
8 grains off = d min
any 1 grain off less than dmin

any 7 grains on close to dmax
8 grains on dmax
so 8 grains with gives you a "super grain caperble of 256 combinations)...
of course if the emulsion layer is even thicker in terms of grains
stacked up on each other then you need even less width to represent a
256 shade sensor
