Oly's official position is that the fact that the pixels are set
deeper in the chip is a factor, as the noise is highest at the
surface. There was something similar implied on the Panasonic site
posted earlier. Now, I have no idea what this means and I'm pretty
sure that none of the Oly people I've spoken too are not electronics
specialists either. But that is what they are saying or being told to
say.
