Why wouldn't the FL-50 at least equal the T45 since the GN's are 50m
and 45m respectively?

The old OM flashes should work fine on the E-series but only in auto mode
(just like on an OM-1). You won't get TTL or any of the other fancy flash
features. For the best ease of use get one of the FL flashes. Go for an
FL-50 if you can afford it otherwise an FL-36 should do fine. The only
difference between them is the power output. Too bad Olympus doesn't bring
out an FL series flash similar to the T-45, it had enough output to bounce
light off of 12' ceilings!
