My wife and I attended a charity auction a couple of weeks ago. We took an
interest in a particular photograph, and bid it up to a pretty substantial
price, but were outbid by $100 at the very end. After
the auction, we met the photographer's parents, and I gave them my contact
information.
This week I heard from the event organizer and the photographer in separate
e-mails. The organizer said they had been given a second print, and they'd be
willing to sell it to me for my high bid. I also
heard from the photographer who said he had another print and could sell it for
what it would normally sell at a gallery.
If I buy from the photographer, he takes the proceeds, and I pay just a little
more than 1/2 what I bid at the auction. On the other hand, if I buy the print
from the organization, a good cause benefits, but
I'm out nearly twice as much $$$, and the photographer gets nothing.
What would you do?
