I don't think that has anything to do with film v. digital latitude.
The metering would have destroyed the images in any kind of medium.
When I was Olympus looking on dpreview I looked at a lot of images
people had taken and the good ones almost always had adjustments to
the exposure whether E-1 or C8080. A particular effective adjustment
seemed to be to stop using the Olympus matrix metering and switch to
center weight and leave a permanent minus 1/3 or 2/3 stop on the
exposure compensation.
