Thom Hogan, a long time Nikon wonk, a little over a year ago, tested
all the digital cameras then that took Nikon lenses and they went
from 7 to 8 1/2 stops. The 8 1/2 was the Kodak whose wide dynamic
range included shadow noise. When its black level was raised to mask
the noise it was about 7 1/2 stops.
