A Canon shooting friend suggested that the fringing in this case was
probably due to the 24-105 lens and to check the shots done on the 1DS
Mark II (17 MP full frame). After digging around on dpreview again I
find that fringing is not evident in a somewhat comparable image from
the 1DS Mark II shot with the 17-40 L4 at 23mm. Image #10 at
<http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/?gallery=canoneos1dsmkii_preview/>
(caution, the sample is 11MB)
So, it probably is the lens. Apart from specific lens quality issues
the 24-105 was shooting at its shortest FL setting while the 17-40 was
shooting in its mid-range.
