I don't think that's the cause of the problem in this case though.
You'd normally see that effect most pronounced in the corners of the
image and that's not the case here. With this sample, you're seeing it
towards the top of the frame but it extends down towards the centre.
It doesn't get any more pronounced as you move to the edges either.
In this case, it looks like it's an effect caused from the dark, thin
branches and the very bright sky behind it. It's also not an effect
solely limited to digital. I have a couple of film shots that show the
same effect in similar lighting conditions (fine silhouette details in
front of strong backlighting). I can put up a scanned example if you'd
like.
