[OM] Re: New to List, 300mm lens Question

The Tamron SP 300mm f2.8 is a very good lens. It has a 112mm filter ring -
so it's not a compact lens. I use it's longer sibling the Tamron 400/4
frequently. You should look for the green version of the lens. The oldest
version is white and has been reported by one or two people to not be quite
as good. The newest version is a dark charcoal grey. An Olympus OM 1.4x
teleconverter will not work with that version. The 1.4x OM teleconverter
works very well with the green versions. I haven't tried it but the Olympus
digital 1.4x teleconverter looks like it could be used by mounting it to the
camera and the four thirds adapter to it. The Tamron 300/2.8 can be bought
for about $600 while the 400/4 is about $800 on yaBe.

The OM Zuiko 300/4.5 would probably work well with the E-1 but I haven't
tried it. I had quite good success focusing the Tamron 400/4 + 1.4x
teleconverter in the middle of the afternoon. I think the f4.5 would be
bright enough to focus.
