Nils,
Most of the recommendations would be either Canon or Epson.
I used to have an Epson, but switched mostly for the same reasons you are
considering a printer from other manufacturer.
I personally was sold by the innovation, speed and quietness. Innovation,
meaning that at the time, about a year and little more ago Canon had the record
of coming up first on the market with smaller "dots", individual cartriges etc.
It looked like Epson was a follower. I also interrogated the Silverschnozzed
to the point of annoyance and was impressed when he told me how he changed a
cartrige in the middle of a print with no effect on the picture on his S9000.
On the other side, the Epson has its faithful following. I am sure there is a
good reason for that. I think your starting point should be understanding what
it is, because the advantage is clearly on the Canon side and that could be
your base for comparisson.
I would also research what current inks are available for the printers you
choose. I remember that at the time, Canons yellow did not have the longevity
of the Epsons. You might want to look at third party inks too. Keep in mind
that this subject resembles the lens discussion:
Some would never use third party lenses, other think they are just as good if
not better.
