I have had a long-standing affection for old RF's also . . . with a Contax
IIIa and Rollei 35S in periodic use . . . but would not give up the 35mm or
MF SLR's either. They're different tools for different work. Using
something like the Contax IIIa (versus admiring it on a shelf) gives a deep
appreciation for what professional 35mm work was like prior to the Nik*n F
(circa 1959) and handling it gives a deep appreciation for the
craftsmanship that went into designing and manufacturing the entirely
mechanical marvels. Much of the machining on the Contax is a work of art .
. . not quite as extensive or dramatic as the work on the inside of a
railroad watch . . . but it shows in hidden places . . . subtle little
marks that those who made them left as a "signature" and demonstration of
their skills.
