I too have meant to keep out of it, but you tweak me. The only strong
opinion I have about diesels has to do not with driving them, but
driving behind them. I live up a fairly long, steep hill. There has been
for some time (Haven't seen it for a bit, maybe the damn thing died,
horray!) a VW diesel that drives up the same hill. Under the load of
driving, all too slowly, up the hill, it emits the most noxious smell I
have ever encountered from an automobile. I just have to pull over or
turn off and go another way. Other regular stinkers are Mercedes 240Ds
and Toyota pickups. 300D turbos vary lot.
Although many newer diesels are better than the older ones, the thought
of driving in traffic with a largely diesel automotive population is
appalling. Yes, I live where there are a fair number of "fry-diesels'.
While the smell is less noxious than the regular fueled ones, it is
generally stronger. At least it allays any yearning I might develop for
fast food. I don't know what the pollution characteristics of automotive
diesels are, but I do know that truck and industrial diesel engines emit
many rather nasty oxides of nitrogen along with lots of soot. The State
of California is coming up with standards to require reduction of these
health harmful emissions.
