It's possible that the button base (the plastic part surrounding the buttons)
has a broken standoff. If the spot button is pressed too hard, it's possible
to put enough pressure on the circuit board that it breaks one of the
standoffs that it's screwed to. This allows the circuit board to sit lower
resulting in intermittent contact with the buttons around the break. The
only fix is to replace the button base with a new one.

That's really odd, the two shouldn't have anything to do with each other.
