Bolshy surely derives from bolshevik, and has the meaning difficult, but
Russian 'bolshoi' does mean big/great/major, and is itself the root of
Russian 'bolshevik' (meaning a member of the majority, vs 'menshevik', a
member of the minority).

Some words in the glossary seem not to fit the analysis - I'm sure that
rozzer for cop predates the movie, bolshy did and does not mean 'great'
but difficult (perjorative truncation of Bolshevik)
