...which I've read somewhere that would be more or less the same DOF of a
300mm @ f11, thus allowing the use of DOF scale on the focusing barrel.

I've got the 1.5x Match Mate Kiron and the Zuiko 300/4.5. I've used them
together, but I don't recall any serious vignetting. However, my 300 is too
'buried' now to check it out ;-)
Although these pics won't show any vignetting (they're heavily cropped and
downsampled), here are some results of the Zuiko 300/4.5 + Kiron 1.5x combo
(taken with the EOS-300D plus Kindai OM adapter):
