No, it's actually pretty efficient. The stoker's cranks run a chain that
goes to a freewheel on a jackshaft, so that the stoker can coast and can
shift gears relative to the captain. Then there's a chain down to the
captain's crankset, like a standard tandem, and then a standard
drivetrain from the captain's crankset to the road.
A clean, well lubricated chain drive is more than 98 0.000000e+00fficient if I
remember correctly, so there really isn't much loss there.
