Sorry, AndrewF and John. I think know what he meant too, but for a
politician at a press conference that's a failed speech. Anyway,
what he thought he knew, he didn't (e.g. a nuclear or biological
capability - I don't count chemical weapons as WMD).

I agree. Over here, there was a regular (joke) "Donald Rumsfeld quote
of the week" spot on BBC radio, but I could see exactly what he meant
in the "unknowns" quote and it made perfect sense to me, too. Indeed I
think it was a rather eloquent statement!
