I have a third source of reading, this one from Olympus and called
'Manual for Motor Drive Group'. It dates from 1989. 
On page 18 there is a chapter called 'Choosing the power unit'. It has
a scheme illustration, in which clearly the relay cords are shown as
possible ways of connecting the MD 1 and 2 on one side and either of
the three power sources (M 18V control grip 1-2, NiCd pack 1-2, M.AC
Control Box) on the other.

On p. 22 there is another scheme called 'The fully comprehensive OM
Motor Drive Group' which clearly shows the same.

Another version of this booklet (from 1977) is in the OM e-SIF, also
on-line here:

In this version you can see another drawing in which the same
connections are made on printed page 22 (which is pdf-page 15).

So at a given point in time Olympus before 1977 did no longer
discourage use of the relay cords with the NiCd pack...
