As my father used to say,

"Funny like a screen door in a submarine!"  I spent about 2 hours on that when 
you include the time to fight the film curl into the
holder upside down, then trying to close the film holder, fighting the curl the 
whole way.  Sheesh!

funny about the manual.  the Scan Dual II manual PDF currently on the Minolta 
site still tells you to insert emulsion side up, and
the Scan Dual III manual tells you emulsion side down.  And these are pretty 
much the same unit with improvements for the III.
