Confusing terminology. 24bit (total) is the same as 8bit (per channel).
Photoshop uses the per channel language and scan software tends to use
the total number. I suspect you are scanning at 48bit (16 per channel) I
scan at 48bit in Vuescan (Device Tab, bits per pixel), then let is do
the down conversion (Files Tab, TIFF file type) before it goes to disk,
rather than waiting to do it in PS.
