And I agree with your remarks about sharp lenses. Since we are using a film 
format as small as 35mm is, sharpness has been a major challenge for lens 
makers, camera makers, and film makers (until the current P&S 400 asa etc 
nonsense became the vogue). To my mind it doesn't make sense to knock a 
sharp lens when sharpness - particularly affordable sharpness - has been a 
goal of manufacturers and photographers alike.

Otherwise, why would Pop Photo bother measuring and printing charts that 
report and illustrate lens sharpness? Why not use the end of a Coke bottle?

If a particular use you have requires a softer image, I suggest use any of the 
techniques Walt suggests and/or use a renowned soft-focus lens of which 
even the Zuiko series has some.

One of the attractions of the Cosina-manufactured Voigtlander L & R + Heliar 
lens systems that Wayne Harridge ( and I'm green with envy, Wayne) has 
just got, is the remarkable sharpness that that camera / lens system delivers.
