I haven't used one, but can say that the 1-7 does what you suggest for
long, slow lenses. It is much brighter than a 2-4 or Beattie on a
1000/11 lens and the central spot does not black out and gives the same
focus point as using a 2-4, but more easily. The area outside the
central spot is bright and clear, but does not focus (or one could say
is always in focus), so DOF (read none, at 1000mm) can only be judged by
moving the view around.

does anyone have experiene with the 1-5 screen? it looks like the center
won't darken with the 24 and 35 shift lenses - is that true, or am i reading
the chart wrong?
i know that it probably won't give DOF indications or correct manual
exposure, but i am interested in the clear field. is it brighter than the 2
series screens?
