I don't want to imply that the Bogen head is better than anything else. It
is just biggest one that I happen to own. I bought it used for about $100.
The big handle is in the way sometimes but it is easy to use with gloves
on. I have it on a Bogen 3221W tripod and the whole assembly weighs about 12
pounds. It feels much heavier than that. There are many large ballheads that
are superior to the Bogen. I've never wanted one bad enough to pay the price
which is a lot more than $100. The 400-500 price range I mentioned was list
prices which can be bettered considerably. Maybe someday I'll get the urge
but I just bought 8 pairs of skis and two pair of boots so better not even
think about it now.

I've just taken a look at your ballhead over on the B&H Photo site:

Those controls look awful large and protruding, just begging to snag a
camera strap. If they also interfere with your camera body and attached
motor drive then that's another strike against that kind of design
philosophy.
Now compare your head design to mine:

The weight's about the same and the price is similar. The big difference we
can see is the size and design of the control knobs. I don't know how well
the friction control works on the Bogen to hold gear, but it sounds as if
that might be an issue as well.
