If we're talking about Shoe 1, it's possible you have the Acme knock-off of
that item. I've seen a few of those over the years. They may have used
metal for those blocks. You can tell an Acme Shoe 1 from an Olympus by
comparing the star wheels used to tighten the shoe. The Olympus wheel is
very different.

Mine is made of metal and rigid plastic. No rubber or even flexible
plastic. Nothing to act like a spring (unless I put a huge gob of
that brown rubber cement, to act as a cushion).
