The only way this will happen is if the other bidder's highest amount is
exactly $0.17 higher than your highest... then the snipe program just
determines when the bid is placed. If it was any more than $0.17, enough to
get the next higher 'bid increment' then it would have gone to that next
increment.
I won a rather large auction by less than $1 once... I usually pick somewhat
oddball amounts as my highest bid, and that time I was just a little bit
higher, but enough.
