There is a simpler approach than drilling, measuring out strings
and cutting a triangle of cloth.
I learned years ago to just hang the camera bag from the tripod.
Just slip the strap around the center post (above the base) and
let the bag hang down between the legs. (that didn't sound
good).
This works fine, unless there is a strong wind which could get
the bag swinging. This mass also has the benefit of providing a
vibration dampening affect.
I use this technique quite often with my backpacking tripod,
which is flimsy, at best. Works great, less filling.
Best of all, it has the advantage of keeping your bag of goodies
right with you instead of getting kicked, stepped on or getting
grabbed by the local hoodlums.
Another way to attach weight to the tripod is to trade in the
OMs for a N*k*n or C*n*n "WonderDigit".
