Sometimes, early on, we'd see separation in conjunction with impact, but
not always.  Over time it became obvious that the impact would only
accelerate the separation, not directly cause it.

No, upon disassembly, you'll see that the third "group" from the front
(the second "floating" group) will be soaked in oil!  Seems the lube Oly
used to make things move smoothly gets too runny, and ends up invading
the housing that holds the third group.  This group is actually two
elements cemented together.  Over time, the oil would dissolve the
cement.  The most obvious result is that the lens won't focus at
infinity.  I don't know how it would affect image quality otherwise.

The bad news is that the element is no longer available new (where have
we heard that before? ;^).  The good news is that it's easy to get to,
and easy to re-cement!  So if you've got a 75-150 in really good
condition, it might be worth repairing!
