Hi folks,
I've had a bit of fun over the last couple of days.
I have an OM1 that I bought ? 12 years ago, and the leatherette on the back
has been a pain all that time. The underlying rubber "glue" has never set, so
the back covering has wandered around at the slightest pressure; sticking-
out ends and all. Cleaning 600ff made no lasting improvement.
So I bought some lighter fluid (naphtha) and soaked/rubbed it off, followed by
meths to finish the job. Same on the body.
Then I applied Selleys "rubber" contact cement and fitted them together.
Seems to work. Cleaned up the waste rubber, and cleaned the exterior of the
the leatherette with the organic solvents then a (water) damp rag.
Foam sealing I could see had turned to mush, so I replaced the hinge end
foam of the body, and the 4 tiny pads that the mirror stops against, with
strips cut from a locally-made durable, tough weather-seal for houses and
cars.
The camera is transformed. It looks great; clean leatherette and chrome, and
it even SOUNDS better, and seems smoother. Can't be of course, but it does
look good, esp with a 50/1.8 MIJ on the front.
