If you have the time, consider the Chaco Canyon National Historic Site, a trip
that will take you from Santa Fe and dump you on I-40 east of Gallup, NM. The
road is only partially paved, but "my father's Oldsmobile" handled it just
fine.
This place was the Mecca of Anasazi life, and the photo opportunities are
everywhere, both at the site and on the road. Expect to see wild horses on the
second leg to I-40. Look for stone ruins on hilltops all around, where fires
were lit in sequences to communicate long distance. Check out:
