Like to thank everybody collectively for their responses. Some of you were
also kind enough to post to me personally; 'preciate it.
Some things are just better if we base ourselves in a few places: a couple
of days in Denver, a week in Santa Fe, four days (or so) in Flagstaff, then
back to Denver and home. Got people already to come and live in the house
and take care of the dogs while we're gone.
Flagstaff looks to be within reasonable driving distance of a few things,
as does Santa Fe. I appreciate the recommendations to keep moving around,
but for my wife and I, we've discovered that schlepping our bags around
daily makes us cranky -- we'd rather drive a little more to see places than
always be trying to find new hotels/motels/whatever. (This strategy has
worked well for us in the past while traipsing around Europe.)
May have to re-think my kit: perhaps the 200/4.0 and the
21/2.0. Dunno. Trying to stay ultra-minimalist considering the potential
vistas and details available to be photographed.
May also have to re-think the SUV we're renting -- I think it needs to be
more "muscular," just in case. More expensive, but then, if it gets us out
of a jam...
Thanks again, everyone. Unless the weather's unusually nice, we'll
probably have to bag the North Rim this time around and hope for a repeat
sometime in the future. Perhaps El Nino will work in our favour this year.
And then there's the food. Mmmmmmm, bowls and bowls of spicy green
chili... mmmmmmmm...
