Metric thread notation is different from US thread notation.
This same issue comes up a lot on bicycles. In the descriptions
above, M1.7 specifies both the diameter and the pitch of the
threads, while 4 is indeed the length of the screw. I don't know
what the pitch is for M1.7 screws, but it's part of the spec.
Likewise, on a bicycle, an M5x12 screw and an M5x20 screw have
the same pitch, just different lengths.
