True . . . and much, much deeper for most lenses. However, a rectangular
shade requires two things:
1. a bayonet or other type of mount with a pin or lug to maintain proper
orientation.
2. non-rotation of the lens' front ring (applicable to most, but not all
OM lenses).
The round screw-on hoods are, by necessity round. It would be very
difficult to design a screw-on hood that required orientation. It also
error-proofs the clamp on hoods by making them independent of
orientation. I get terrible visions of dumbfounded users coming up with
things like:
"I turned the hood vertical, but still got a horizontal picture. Not only
that, the corners and two sides look dark, too."
Don't laugh too much. Many things are designed for the "lowest common
denominator." The world is loaded with utterly clueless people about
matters photographic. It's why P&S's and completely automagic
Wunderziegeln are so popular. The bulk of the consumers *don't* want to be
bothered with having to know anything more than which general direction to
point the thing. They expect the camera maker and processing lab to pick
up the rest to make something useable out of what they point it at when
they press the shutter release. In the U.S., the annual "worst nightmare"
of consumer processing labs will occur five days from now on July 5th.
Lindahl makes a marvelous lens hood system for those who are very, very
serious about using lens hoods, and it's neither circular nor tulip shaped.
IMHO the tulip shaped hood mentioned is "more fluff than stuff." It's
really for show to demonstrate to potential buyers what a mondo lens the
camera must have to require a hood like that. It's an example of lens hood
designs by marketing departments. As mentioned previously, it might have
some modest utility at protecting the front element.
