Modern Photography in their 1985 Buying guide give these figures for the
Tamron 17 f/3.5 (Tested April 1981).

Field test slides: Fine image detail across field at all apertures, but
moderate
contrast. Flare very well controlled throughout. Illumination across field
excellent. Linear distortion noticeable in some subjects, but present in
average amounts.
