I say go with a 300/4.5 + 2xa. This yields a 600/9 which is easier to
focus than the 500/8 and much more versatile. Also the tripod mount is a
plus. Even though it is tempting to shoot free hand with the 500 or 300
I get much better results with a tripod. You can in a pinch shoot free
hand with either but the 500 is just too slow and dark for me. Plus at
f8 vs f4.5 you are shooting at a slower speed with the 500. I've even
gotten usable results adding the 1.4xa to the 300 and 2xa. The 500/8
only goes in the bag when weight is a concern like backpacking. Here's a
