Chrome plating of the lense mount has two purposes, one protect the
brass from corrosion, and, two provide improved abrasion resistance.
Brass is relatively soft and wears easily. Chrome is very hard and and
very wear resistant. A brass only mount would soon become loose, a
properly chrome plated mount will outlast the rest of the camera.

I agree, Jerry. Leica bayonet mounts were chrome plated brass for
decades and they held up just fine. Their durability seems to be
reflected in the continuing market for 50 year old M3s. Leica may be
still using that type of mount on their new cameras. That chrome
plating over a softer base is very effective and durable is reflected
in the use of the chrome plating of the aluminum cylinders of high
performance automobile engines. Porsche is one maker who has used the
technique.
