Wow, sorry to hear that Roger. I have heard of this, but thankfully it
hasn't happened to me yet. I have read of this happening in posts on the
Olympus US E-10 forum where there are a few who have sworn off using
Smart Media cards at all for this very reason. I always have a 128mb SM
card in my camera and never had a problem with it. I only download from
the camera via USB, not with a card adapter, so the card contacts are
not getting worn. I have heard one preventative measure is to use
something like Caig Pro-Gold on the contacts to help prevent this.
As an aside, I have also heard of this happening to both SM and CF cards
when used with card readers and accidentally re-formatted by the PC or
Mac OS instead of by the camera. Also, always be sure to drag the icon
to the trash before doing anything with cards/cameras on Mac OS when
finished downloading.
