an authority on third party lens.
As to Vivitar 400/5.6 lens I have had two. The TX
interchangeable mount version was the best and the
fixed mount next. The Tokina SD 400/5.6 and Sigma
400/5.6 APO or APO macro are probably better lens.
I've owned all of these at one time or another. The
Sigma APO macro was probably the best of them as it
had the highest contrast and focused more closely than
the rest do. I have a Tamron 400/4 so sold the others.
As to the Tamron 300/2.8, the olive green one was the
best according to consensus and tests. The first one
did not have internal focus, was not as sharp and
close focusing was not as good a version 2. The third
version, was not quite as sharp as version 2,
according to what I have read.
