The aspect ratio of DC is usually fixed even at different resolution
setting. Ex. 640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200...
You select a DC based on it has a good menu (user interface)? My first
priority will be good reputation and picture quality.

You are right. Mine has a 1280x980, 1280(3x2), 1024x768, 640x480. I
assume the 2x3 is about 1280x856. That change in aspect made me
assume that there were other variations. Looking at this S*ny DSC-P30
again the problem is that the zoom is not the same on the LCD as in
the viewfinder. At WA the field in the viewfinder is substantially
narrower than on the LCD and at the extreme of the telephoto the
field in the viewfinder is substantially wider than on the LCD, about
a 25 0.000000e+00rror in the horizontal dimension at either extreme. It is
also off in the "normal" position, but it is much less so. So I end
up using the LCD since that seems to be what gets recorded.
