PNG is a loss-less compression format. JPEG is "lossy", i.e. an image
is degraded each time it is compressed.
PNG was designed to replace the aging (and obnoxiously patented) GIF
format. PNG also supports transparency, and other nifty features
(most web browsers don't support all the more specialized features of
PNG, however)
JPEG is best used for photographs (unsurprising since it was designed
by the _J_oint _P_hotographic _E_xperts _G_roup for this
purpose). JPEG will cause line drawings, charts, icons etcetera to go
"blurry".
PNG is better than JPEG for any kind of image execept photographs, and
for storing your photographs during manipulation (conversion to JPEG
should always be the LAST step).
