Have e-mailed the seller, and received a reply.  He's graciously offered to 
refund me the purchase price, which is, of course, perfectly fair.
Ah well, lessons learned.  He wants to check his photos to see if the 
damage shows up in any of them.  I've told him I'll wait to hear from him 
again before sending the lens back.
