Realizing that I stand a good chance of being impaled on a stake, my well
poisoned, my fields salted, and my name wispered as a warning to
children...do people actually like the shutter speed ring placement on
OM's?
Yes, you're as good as dead now ... <G>
I keep
thinking I'll get used to the novelty of this arrangement, but I haven't
yet. Promise me I will learn to love it, and I will try harder to believe
that Maitani's genius as a designer is absolute. -Marcus (who otherwise
loves his Zuiko's; and his compact, full featured camera bodies)
I think your last statement (reference to "compact") answers your own
question. It's is a decision that carries through the OM line of necessity
because the lenses have to mount on all OM's with the lovely offset provided
by the shutter ring. The exception is the OM2000, which you might consider
BTW, but most of us, even those of us who are grateful for it, don't
consider it a real OM since it was out-sourced to Cosina. Good camera, but
way different.
There's no question in my mind that the shutter speed ring is an
eccentricity. I don't know if it is genius, but it makes other things
possible, as for example on the OM-2(x) one of the easiest exposure
compensation dials imaginable, and on the OM-3(x) and OM-4(x) the greatest
metering system extant IMHO. Ironically, it is more of a nuisance on the
OM-1 than any other body, since setting the shutter speed is a constant
chore on a manual body. Even so, I guess I have gotten in the habit of
selecting shutter speed before putting eye to viewfinder in most cases based
on the type of shot in the offing.
More irritating to me is the variable locations of aperture rings on lenses,
which are sometimes close in and sometimes farther out.
