With my shooting style I seem to have to move often even if using a
zoom. It never seems to be quite long or short enough. Of course, neither
are the primes. :-)

Depends on your shooting style, ect. Your idea works fine if you CAN move a
few steps either way, but many times that is not possible and a zoom can be
invaluable in those cases,
