I took my daughters out on a photo excursion today. As of yesterday,
they're both 8 years old (the youngest had her birthday yesterday). I
equipped them both with OM-G bodies and 50/1.8 lenses. Put fast 400 speed
Fuji in them, set the lenses at F/11 and off we went. I figured I'd give
them depth of field and fast shutter speeds, both a requirement for an
8-year-old.
I took an OM-4T, 18/3.5, 50/2 Macro and 35-105/3.5-4.5.
We went down an interesting road near us (with the top down, of course) and
stopped where where were interesting things. There is a small stream that
criss-crossed the road and a nice waterfall. There was even a small
cemetary (nothing like showing your kids dead bodies!).
I let them shoot a 24 exposure roll each and I shot a 36.
I promised them that once we got the pictures back I would post their best
results on their own webpage for their friends and grandparents to see.
The unforgiveable? When I rewound my oldest's film, it barely rewound at
all. I'm not sure I got it on the takeup spool properly and I am afraid she
doesn't have a single picture. I warned her that might have happened and
she is, of course, unhappy. I promised another trip next weekend.
Slowly I am going to teach them the basics of a camera. I started with the
concept of focusing. Next I'll work on the relationship of aperture to
shutterspeed (not worrying about film speed yet). Last I'll work on
multiple lenses. I let them both use the 35-105 set on 105 for a couple
shots, but I'm not sure they really followed why the picture was bigger.
There was one point I wished I had brought the 300/4.5. Two horses in the
distance. Ah well, another time and opportunity.
When I get the results, I'll post the link.
An enjoyable time for all......future Zuikoholics.
