We had a long discourse on this a few years back ,check the archives. My 
memory is  that 15V is the maximum voltage if you use batteries that have low 
internal resistance, like NiCds. This was based on reading the service manual 
for the MD and doing a bit of reading between the lines on what voltages were 
used in the specs.  Alkalines have a relatively high internal resistance, so 
the voltage drops from 18V to around 15V anyway under load.  Remember, the AC 
control pack power supply for AC line operation of the MD only supplies 15V.
