Scott, This can be a dangerous practice. I believe that codes forbid use
of rechargeables in smoke dectectors. This is because NiCads lose charge
just sitting there. You must religiously test your alarms frequently to
be sure that they are functioning. Alkalines are idiot proof and will
hold a charge for a long time. Do yourself and your family a favor and
replace those batteries!! You'd also have a hard time collecting if the
insurance people found out.
