Mike,
I used an SC 50/1.8 F.Zuiko for almost two decades. It was a very good
lens. No, it's not quite the 50/1.2 or 50/1.4 I now have, but still very good.
I believe they make exellent body caps, and I don't mean that
disparagingly, but because a camera body should always have a lens on
it. I try to keep a standard lens on every body.
Zuikoholics should consider themselves fortunate that the ubuquitous
50/1.8's are just that, ubiquitous enough to be very inexpensive. There
are enough of them around in excellent user condition or better that the
price is superb considering what you get for your $$$. Probably the best
bang for the buck in the entire Zuiko lineup. The 50/1.4's probably run a
distant second, but there are enough of them around to keep them relatively
inexpensive too.
Mike, take comfort in knowing there is a fitting tribute to the standard
lens with the ADITL II Gallery. All the images in it were done with
standard lenses, some of them 50/1.8's on or about the Autumnal Equinox in
1999:

Just today I went out too make some specific shots in the fog/mist at a
local park. Used only the 50mm that was on each body doing it. As usual,
it was the first lens checked to see if it would work for the task. When
it did, there was no need to change it for a different one.
