Read a book once on the art of negotiation by a guy who had built a
career as a professional negotiator. Sorry his name escapes me. The
thing I remember is that he said there is no negotiation going on
when you are talking with someone who does not have the power to
close the deal. The salesman is just there to wear you down so that
the sales manager can move in for the kill.
