In the 4th AD Marksmanship Unit in the late 60s we used the old aluminum
film cans to blacken the rifle's sights to reduce reflection. A piece
of carbide and a bit of water produced acetylene that was expelled
through a hole in the lid. When lit it produced carbon black that made
the sights absolutely dead black.
OM content: The Battery Commander had a Pen F that he had used in
Vietnam.
