I save them to use at school. There is a really fun experiment that
teaches the students the importance of recording information and
making inferences. It only requires Alka Seltzer and water. We cut up
the tablet into equal parts and record the amount of ingredients used
and the time until the lid pops off. (snip)

Gee, Gregg, I hope you don't get expelled for making bombs!
I had two students "experimenting" with Draino and aluminum (aluminium)
foil for a science fair several years ago. Now that was interesting. But
the best explosion I have personally experienced was when the 3 gallons of
black powder a neighbor (who made fireworks professionally) was mixing in a
ball mill blew up and shattered the windows in his house. I was there
trying to get a client a job. He only lasted two days and then quit!
The neighbor used to tell me about really interesting combinations that are
quite powerful - you wouldn't want to mix enough to fill a film container.
BTW, does anyone know the ingredients of the white capsules that were in
WWll gas masks? But that's another story!
Gregg
