That's the method I use. Something almost always goes "grrrrrr...."
Not sure if it's the film sprockets being stripped, or me being aggravated.
The OM-1 does this more smoothly than my CannotanOMon FTbn, which tends to
overtighten the film.
I fiddled with the multiple exposure option on mom's iS-2 recently. Dead
simple, perfect registration.

A looong time ago, when I attended the Nikon School, one method suggested
was one I still use.
1. Rewind until film is firm, not "heavy tight".
2. Open back the rewind knob crank and hold between fingers. This gives
better support than trying to simply put pressure on the closed rewind
knob.
3. Press rewind button
4. Advance film
5. Cross fingers
